WATER SOFTENER Troubleshooting - DISINFECTING in 6 EASY STEPS!

To get rid of that smell we need to disinfect or sanitize the resin tank, that’s where that smell is coming from. When a water softener goes through the salt or brine backwash cycle it does not remove microorganisms like bacteria or algae that tend to grow in the resin bed. That’s what stinks! So you need to remove these yourself. 1. Start by manually running a regeneration cycle to flush out the equipment while using a media cleaner like Res Care or Iron Out. See video here   • Water Softener Tr...   2. Make sure the brine tank is about ½ full of salt. 3. Pour 3 gallons of hot tap water into the brine tank, making sure that you don’t overfill it. 4. Add about 2 fluid ounces (about ¼ cup) of bleach to the brine well per cubic foot of resin in the resin tank. A cubic foot of resin is a 30,000 grain water softener for example. That will be enough for most smaller residential softeners. Larger ones will require 3-4 ounces. See this video to learn more about how a water softener works.   • How Does a Water ...   Be careful not to overdose with bleach or you may damage the resin beads in the resin tank. Using a quantity or concentration of bleach higher than recommended by your water softener manufacturer OR leaving the resin exposed to a strong bleach solution for more than an hour risks damage to the resin. 5. Run the water softener through a manual regeneration cycle. You’ll need to have the bleach contact the resin beads for about an hour - a typical regen cycle time for most softeners – this is enough for the bleach solution to complete the disinfection. If your softener's brine cycle is shorter than an hour of backwash you can stop the regen cycle while the resin tank is saturated with bleach solution and let it sit long enough so the total exposure time is about an hour. Complete the regen cycle. 6. Run an extra manual water softener recharge cycle:, yes, another one to make sure all of the chlorine or bleach has been removed. So How Often and When Should a Water Softener be Sanitized? 1. If your water softener has been shut down for a week or more, like after you’ve been away on an extended vacation. 2. If you suspect bacterial contamination. 3. If your water smells like garbage right after the water softener has regenerated. 4. If you see a color change in water after it has run through the water softener compared to before. 5. If the water tastes awful after it has run through the water softener 6. If new resin has just been installed in the water softener resin tank 7. According to your water softener's maintenance schedule. Manufacturers recommend cleaning and sanitation intervals ranging from as often as every three months to annually.
