How Much Media is in my Water Softener?
Has your water softener stopped softening your water? Is the media bed clogged to the point where it’s slowing down the water flow in your home, cottage or cabin? Maybe your media is so fouled that the water coming from your water softener smells like garbage? You need to replace the resin in your water softener and need to know how much media is in my water softener. I’m going to explain how you know starting right now!
Hi I’m Gary the Water Guy and I simplify water filtration to help you conquer crappy water for your family!
Before you begin, here are a few things to know
1) Whatever water filtration equipment you’re replacing the media in you need to
know what kind of media goes inside and how much. This is not the time to be replacing the media with a different media hoping for a different result. There may also be gravel at the bottom of that media tank, if that’s the case you will need to replace that too. Check it out before you start! We have gravel here.
2) Every back washable type filter has free board which is why you need to know how much should be in there so as not to over fill it. Freeboard allows the filter media to expand during back wash.
3) If you don’t have a suitable area to work inside, you’ll be removing the tank and doing the work outside so plan to have some one available to help carry the tank.
4) Media replacement is a messy job so plan for it. For Water Softeners, if your tank is this size, you’ll need this amount of media.
Media Needed for Water Softeners by Tank Size

9x48 = 1 Cubic Foot of Media
