If you have well water with iron in it, you may have heard that a water softener can also remove that iron. But can it? Well, the answer is both yes and no!
1) It depends on the type of iron you have. If your water comes out of the faucet colorless but turns color after it sits, you have ferrous, or clear water iron, and a water softener can remove that type of iron.
2) BUT, there's a limitation. A water softener can only remove up to 1 ppm (part per million) of iron before it significantly shortens the lifespan of the water softener.
3) Adjustments are needed. You will have to adjust the hardness settings to compensate for the iron—adding 5 grains per gallon (gpg) for every part per million of iron. This means your water softener will use more salt when used for iron removal.
4) Watch out for sulphur smell. If your water has a sulphur smell, which often accompanies iron, a water softener will not remove it. In such cases, it's better to have an iron and sulphur filter before the water softener, like Snap filters, which can also remove ferric iron.
